There are many mysteries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe which are still unanswered. One such question is ‘Why Time Stone is untouchable?’. We have seen the Time Stone in its exposed form thrice during Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. First time we saw it when Doctor Strange gave it to Thanos, then we saw it again when Thanos gets the Time Stone and he puts it in his Gauntlet. The final time we saw Time Stone in its exposed form in Endgame, when the Ancient One gave it to Professor Hulk. But in all these scenes, one thing was common, and that is, no one was able to touch the Stone and the Stone was just levitating between their fingers. So, in this post we will discuss why Time Stone is untouchable.

Time Stone
Before jumping into the post, please keep in mind that it is not 100% true that the Time Stone is untouchable, it’s just because we haven’t seen anybody touching it till date. We may encounter some situation in the future MCU movies where we may witness someone touching the Time Stone, probably in the Eternals movie. But since then, we have some theories which explains why can’t Thanos touch the Time Stone. So, let’s begin.
Theory 1: Time World
According to the first theory, Time Stone is untouchable because it wants to remain being untouched. We have seen in the comics that when a creature named Sleepwalker enters inside Time Stone, he grows young and old rapidly.
Now if we connect it to the MCU, then we can say that the Time Stone develops a force field around itself every time it is exposed from its container because if anybody touches the time stone directly, then he/she may be sucked inside the time world and get trapped inside it, as we have seen something similar with the Soul Stone, where the user enters inside the Soul Stone, every time he uses it.

Theory 2: Self Protection
Throughout the past MCU movies, we have seen that every Infinity Stone needs to be placed inside a container like Tesseract, Orb, Sceptre or the Eye of Agamotto in order to use it properly. But, we have also seen that in case of other stones, one can use them in their exposed state even without any containment too, only if he/she is able to control the stone’s powers, like Thanos used Power Stone with his bare hand against Captain Marvel during the final fight in Endgame.
But, in case of Time Stone, we have seen that it can only be used when it is placed inside a container, like the Eye of Agamotto or the Infinity Gauntlet. So, according to this theory, the Time Stone is created in such a way that one can only use it when it is placed in a container and not in its exposed state.
To ensure that no one uses it in its exposed state, Time Stone creates a force field of aura, every time someone tries to use it in its exposed state. This force field vanishes automatically when the stone is placed back in the container again.
Theory 3: Time is Untouchable
This theory seems to be the most legit theory among all the theories. According to this theory, every Infinity Stone represents a particular element of nature: Space, Time, Reality, Soul, Mind and Power. Among all these elements of nature, a mortal being can access the rest five elements but Time. You can be powerful, you can have mindfulness, if you are alive then you definitely have a soul, you live in a particular reality which you can change as per your choices and as a developed civilization you can have access to space too.
But when we talk about time, then no matter what, you cannot have access to time. You can watch time passing by, but you cannot do anything about it or you cannot change it. This is why Time Stone is untouchable, because time itself is untouchable for the mortal beings.
