There would be no person in this world who is a true Marvel fan but doesn’t know about Spiderman. As a young teenage superhero, Spiderman has always been the most famous superhero of the Marvel universe. But along with the increasing popularity of this character, all other characters related to Spiderman also came into the limelight. One of these characters in Morbius, the living vampire of Marvel comics. Recently we got to see a trailer of live action Morbius movie starring Jared Leto in the lead. But the twist to the story came when we realised that although this movie is produced by Sony, still we have some hints of the Marvel cinematic universe. These hints confused the fans about the actual franchise in which this movie is situated. Is it situated in Sony or in MCU? Let’s find out the answer to this question.
Is Morbius a Marvel Movie?
Before getting directly to the answer, let’s first check that why this confusion actually arose at the first place. Let’s check out the history of Marvel and Sony, which would lead us to find our answer.
History of Sony & Marvel
To find the proper answer to this question, we have to check it from the point where it all started. So the fact behind this is that, Sony is the universe which actually had the rights of Spiderman and its related characters from the beginning, which means Sony was the only universe who was able to create a movie featuring Spiderman and its villains. This was like a silver spoon for Sony. But unfortunately, Sony lost its golden chance when ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ series resulted as a massive flop. Due to this huge flop, Sony came to the verge of bankruptcy.
On the other side, MCU was growing as a massive supergiant by producing all hit movies continuously. When Marvel came to know about Sony’s situation, Marvel’s head Kevin Feige offered Sony a deal in which he offered to buy the character rights of Spiderman. But for Kevin’s surprise, Sony refused to accept the deal as they knew that Spiderman was a major asset for their company.
With time, Sony’s condition started getting worse and the only choice Sony was left with was to sell the character rights of Spiderman. But after a lot of discussion, MCU and Sony made a deal in which Sony allowed Marvel to use Spiderman in four movies, which ended with Avengers Endgame.
During the time when MCU was using Spiderman in their universe, Sony took a huge risk and created the ‘Venom’ movie. Surprisingly, this movie resulted as a super hit and finally it helped Sony to get back on its foot. Since Sony was now in a stable condition, hence it offered MCU to return Spiderman to them so that they can create their own Spiderman universe. In 2019, Sony finally took back Spiderman from MCU.
But the story is still not over. After taking back Spiderman from MCU, Sony had to face a huge backlash from fans because everyone loved Tom Holland’s Spiderman in the MCU movies. With no choice left, Sony and Marvel made an ultimate deal, in which it was decided that Tom Holland’s Spiderman can appear in both Marvel and Sony universe.
Where actually Morbius is situated?
When Venom was released, no one had thought that Sony will also create a movie on Morbius in future. But the main point to concentrate here is that when Venom was produced, the Marvel-Sony deal was not complete, hence we didn’t see Spiderman in Venom. But this time the case is different. Morbius is produced after the completion of Marvel-Sony deal. Hence fans had high expectations of seeing Spiderman in Morbius. Sony took the excitement to the next level when we saw Spiderman’s poster and Michael Keaton’s Vulture in Morbius trailer, and this is where all this confusion arose.
We cannot say currently that either this movie is set in Marvel universe, Sony universe or any other universe, but for now we can predict from the trailer that Yes, Morbius is set in the Marvel universe.
The second reason why I am so sure about Morbius being situated in the Marvel universe is that, according to recent rumors it is being said that Tom Holland’s Spiderman is going to be featured in ‘Venom 2’ and a future ‘Kraven the hunter’ movie produced by Sony. Now we know that Tom Holland’s Spiderman is situated in the Marvel universe and hence he is going to appear in Venom 2, then we can say that Marvel universe and Sony universe are not two different universes, but both are a single universe.
