We all know Superman right?, the Kryptonian guy of the DC Universe with a lot of superpowers, like super strength, super speed, heat vision, x-ray vision, and a bunch of other abilities at a super level. Superman is considered as one of the major pillars on which DC has built its universe. It would not be wrong if we say that Superman was the first popular superhero of the world. But, still after being the symbol of hope for almost a century, there are some people who guess Superman is illogical and unscientific, and they are absolutely correct on their point too. Superman has a bunch of abilities which have no explanation in the real world. So today, in this post I will try to explain you the possible science behind one of the major ability of Superman, his flight ability.

How can Superman Fly?
Before analysing the structure, capacities and constraints of the Kryptonians, let us first figure out the strengths and limitations of us humans. According to science, our universe in 4-dimensional space, where we humans are just 3-dimensional creatures. We can navigate through length, depth and height, but we cannot manipulate them as per our wish. We all exist in the same temporal field. As per the fourth dimension, which is ‘Time’, at present we are just able to flow according to it. Neither we can navigate through time, nor we can manipulate it. In other words, we don’t have the control of the flow in which we are flowing vigorously.
But, it is highly possible that there are some creatures in the far away galaxy in our universe who may be highly civilised and are older than us humans. It is also possible that those creatures may have the ability to modify all the dimensions, including time. For now, we humans have no perception about who and where the creatures may be.
Now let’s move on to Superman, who is a resident of planet Krypton, the planet which exists under the light of a huge ‘Red Giant’ star, and also it is shown in the comics that the Kryptonians are able to theorize and navigate through multi-dimensional fields, which is not a choice but necessity for them, or else they would not survive on that planet.
On the other hand we have Superman, a Kryptonian who has spent his entire life on our planet Earth. It is obvious that he also has the same genetics as of his ancestors. But what makes Superman different from other Kryptonians is that he had learnt it all by himself, as no one was there to advice and guide him in discovering his abilities. Due to this, Superman has mastered his Kryptonian skills up to a level which no Kryptonian would have ever imagined of achieving.

Connecting it to our discussion, this indicates that Superman doesn’t fly as normal birds or planes, as we assumed it to be, but the flight process of Superman is more complex than that. As he has an inbuilt ability to manipulate dimensions, hence he can just turn off the gravity of Earth present underneath him just by the will of his mind, which for us is something like turning on the lights of the room by just clapping our hands.
Again if we talk about the speed of his flight, then the same logic applies here too. While flying, Superman just manipulates the air molecules around him to gain the speed of light or more, and then those high velocity molecules push him through the sky.
Superman comics writer Elliot Maggin actually revealed in a post that when he was offered to write his first Superman comic, that time he was instructed that Superman can manipulate his speed to eight times of the speed of light, which is definitely not possible for a normal 3-dimensional creature.
