In the glory of the Thor’s iconic entrance in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, we fans almost forgot the mystery behind Thor’s surprising entrance in ‘Avengers’ movie of 2012. Yes I know that Loki revealed the secret about the entrance later on in the movie itself, but what if I tell you that Loki was not 100% correct. I mean, can you really trust the god of Mischief? So my friend, keep reading this and we will try to disclose the actual reason behind the mysterious entrance of Thor in 2012’s Avengers movie.
Along his long journey throughout the MCU, Thor, the god of thunder has established himself into one of the most recognised superhero of all time. May it be Chris Hemsworth’s iconic acting or Thor Odinson’s epic moments, everything has contributed in making this character fan favourite. But was it always like that? If you take a close look at the entire journey of Thor in the MCU, you’ll find out that no doubt Thor was in MCU for a long time but this character started to gain attention and became fan favourite only after 2017’s ‘Thor Ragnarok’. This movie was like a turning point for this character in the MCU. After this movie, people started to connect more with this character. Not only that, but his fame also got a boost by the epic scene of Thor’s entry in wakanda in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ movie.
While fans were so happy and excited about the iconic entrance of Thor in Infinity War, they almost forgot about a long unsolved mystery related to Thor’s entry. This was non other than Thor’s entry in the 2012’s ‘Avengers’ movie. If you recall the movie, you will remember that the entry scene of Thor on top of the SHIELD jet in Avengers movie was also an epic entrance (may not be so cool as the Wakandan entrance). But apart from the entrance, what really bothered the fans is that how did Thor manage to get back to Earth without Bifrost? This was because, before Avengers movie, we saw in ‘Thor-I’ that at the end of the movie Thor destroyed the Bifrost, or what you can say Rainbow Bridge, after which he was unable to get back to Earth. Later on we also saw that the Bifrost got repaired completely in ‘Thor: The Dark World’, but this movie was released after Avengers movie. So till date this question still remains the same that how did Thor returned to Earth in ‘Avengers-I’ without Bifrost?
Let’s check out some theories regarding this and try to find out the most suitable reason among them.
Theory-1: Loki’s Secret Portal
In the 2013 movie ‘Thor: The Dark World’, we have seen that when the dark elves kill Thor’s mother Frigga, Thor plans to revenge it. For this purpose he enlists the help of his brother Loki, who was imprisoned at that time. Since Odin has issued strict orders that no one should leave Asgard, therefore it was not possible for them to escape via the Bifrost. At this moment Loki claims that he knows some secret escape paths in Asgard, from which they can easily escape to Svartalfheim. At that moment Loki claims that no one knows the secret about the escape portals other than Loki.
But, according to the first theory, if Loki being a young magician knows the secret location of the escape portal then why not her mother Frigga. In ‘Avengers Endgame’ we saw her mentioning that she is the most intelligent person of the entire Asgard and also she was raised by magicians and witches. This makes this theory more stronger which says that maybe in 2012’s Avengers movie, when Heimdall informed Odin about Loki’s actions in the New York city, Odin must have decided to take help of magicians in order to send Thor back to Earth as Bifrost was not available at that moment. For this purpose he must have contacted the most powerful magician of Asgard, his wife Frigga, who may have helped Odin by revealing the location of a secret portal connecting Asgard to Earth.
Personally for me, I feel that this theory is not that bad and also it seems somehow possible. But the main reason why I think this theory is not the actual reason is because if Odin already have found out that secret portals exist in Asgard in 2012, then why he didn’t close it before the Dark World events of 2013.
Theory-2: Odin’s Sceptre
Yeah you read it right, I am not talking about Loki’s sceptre here, instead I am talking about Odin’s sceptre or the trident we saw a lot of time in the MCU. Now before explaining the theory let me remind you that if you have watched ‘Avengers: Infinity war’ closely, then you may remember that when Thor went to dwarf king Eidri in order to form a new weapon for himself, Eidri explained that Stormbreaker is a king’s weapon and also it can summon Bifrost. Now according to my theory no. 2, Odin’s sceptre (or Trident) can also summon the Bifrost as per the wish of its beholder. This is because Odin’s sceptre is also a king’s weapon and probably it was also forged by the dwarfs as all the weapons of Asgard are forged by them. Hence it is possible that it may also have similar powers like Stormbreaker.
Personally, I believe that this theory is legit and fits quite well. But since this theory is so straight forward, I think that this theory will not be able to grab fans’ attention that much, which seems to be clearly done by our next and final theory.
Theory-3: Dark Magic
This is our final theory and the coolest among all the theories. So we all know that in Avengers movie Loki mentioned that Odin may have used dark energy in order to send Thor back to Earth while Bifrost was broken.
We also saw the use of Dark energy being used for teleportation in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ when Heimdall used the dark magic to send Hulk to Earth when Thanos invaded the Asgardian ship. Hence this theory says that Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard may be knowing the use of dark magic, but can use it only on the commands of Odin or anybody who sits on the Throne of Asgard. This may also be the reason that before sending Hulk to Earth in Infinity War, Heimdall looked towards Thor and asked for permission because at that moment Thor was the king of Asgard and without his permission Heimdall couldn’t use his dark magic.
Also, if you see it from the other side then you’ll notice that in Doctor Strange movie, Ancient one also used dark magic for her selfish needs and this dark energy was taken from the dark dimension whose ruler is Dormammu. This relation of the dark dimension with Asgard may also be the reason why Dr. Strange was researching so much about the Asgardians in the initial scenes of ‘Thor: Ragnarok’. If this theory is true then we will definitely get to see some hard chemistry between Thor, Dr. Strange and Dormammu in some future MCU movie.
Personally, this is my favourite theory among all others. Not only because it sounds cooler, but also this theory lays a good plot for the future of MCU and for me, I would love to watch Thor and Dr. Strange teaming up against Dormammu someday.
So these were some of my theories about Thor’s mysterious entry in Avengers movie of 2012. Personally for me the third theory was lit, but this may vary from person to person. Do let me know in the comments that which theory you liked the most and also if you have any different theory regarding this case and which may be the actual reason.
