Captain America is one of Marvel’s most popular superhero, and also the first Avenger of Marvel. We all know the origin story of Captain America from the comics and MCU movie ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, about how he volunteered for the super soldier program and got injected with the super soldier serum. We also know how he selflessly sacrificed himself for his country at the end. But the twist came at the point when we got to know that Captain was still alive after 70 years of being frozen in ice. This incident rose a very important question in every Marvel fan’s mind:

How Captain America survived being frozen?

Fans started imagining many theories about the possibility of this like, was it due to the serum, or something special was there in the ice?

But my friends, after so much of thinking and burning our heads, Marvel finally provided us with the answer to this question. Keep reading further and I will disclose the reason behind this.

During the early months of 2019, the Marvel Station in Las Vegas published a report which states that when Captain America was frozen in ice, at that time his blood wasn’t frozen at all.

Later it was proved by a S.H.I.E.L.D. report that the blood of Captain America contains excessive amount of glucose due to the glycogen present in his liver. This excessive amount of glucose was preventing his blood from reaching the freezing point temperature, and because of this, his blood cells were cyroprotected. This is something similar to the phenomena which takes place in hibernating wood frogs and water bears.

In simple words we can say that the super soldier serum not only provided him with super strength, agility and durability, but it also helped him to survive in extreme low temperatures. This was because of the serum, that Captain’s blood never clotted and helped him remain at the same age for 70 years.

This same stuff is also applicable for Bucky, but where on one side Captain America was present in ice naturally, on the other side Bucky was forcefully kept in the artificially created cryogenic cells whose function was something similar to that of natural ice. Bucky was only taken out of the chambers when Hydra wanted his help. These were the same cryogenic cells which we saw in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ where the other winter soldiers were preserved like Bucky, and also if you observe closely you will notice that none of them have aged either.

Now that you know how Captain America and Bucky managed to survive being in ice, there may be one question roaming in your head, ‘Is it possible to preserve any normal human by keeping him in ice?’. The answer to this question is ‘Yes’, but it is only possible for some days or months, and not for long periods like Cap and Bucky. The details about this theory is explained broadly in the book ‘The Prospect of Immortality’ by Robert Ettinger in 1964.

So this was the answer to one of the most asked fan question of all times. I hope you liked it and if you did, then do share with your friends and also let us know in the comments below if we have missed some important points in the post.
