Birds of Prey | What went Wrong ?

The year 2020 is very special for us superhero fans. The reason for this is that in 2020 we are going to see majority of female leading superhero movies. Talking about this, DCEU recently launched their first movie of 2020 ‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey’. But to every DC fan’s surprise, this movie didn’t do that well in the box office outside of the United States in its initial days of release. Although I loved it a lot, but still the majority of people didn’t. So let’s discuss some of the positive and negative points of the movie. If you haven’t seen this movie yet and are confused whether to see it or not, scroll to the end of the page for my personal opinion. So let’s begin.
Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey
Positive Points
Superb Acting
The acting level of the actors of this movie was excellent. May it be Jurnee’s Black Canary who had cool action scenes or Mary Elizabeth’s Huntress who made us laugh a lot or Ella Jay’s Cassandra Cain whose awesome comic book origin was altered, everyone was perfect at their place. But the best acting among all was of our favourite Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, whose performance was out of the world as we’ve expected.
Awesome Action Scenes
The action scenes or the fight scenes of the movie were very well directed. It will not be wrong if I say it was the BEST action scene we have seen in DCEU in a while.
Colourful Cinematography
Apart from action scenes, one more thing that was different in Birds of Prey as compared to other movies of DC and it is the colourful cinematography of this movie. Generally we have seen the DCEU movies to be set in a dark complex, but this movie broke the barrier and ultimately, made fans happy.
Classic Chase Scenes
In this movie we witnessed some of the most well directed chase scenes, which reminded me of the chase scenes of some iconic movies like John Wick.
So these were some of the positive points I noticed about the movie. But apart from these, there were some negative points too. So now let’s talk about them.
Negative Points
Lack of Acknowledgement
‘Birds of Prey’ may be a well known term for a comic book fan, but for the general public, it is completely new. Also this was the sequel of ‘Suicide Squad’, which is considered one of the major flops of DCEU. So because of this, less people showed interest in watching this movie whose result was its poor performance in box office.
But later the producers got enlightenment and the name of the movie was changed to ‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey’. Thanks god!
Weak Trailer
Generally we see that the trailer/teaser of a movie is always better than the movie itself. This was one of the reason for the sustainment of Suicide Squad. But this is opposite in case of Birds of Prey. The actual movie is cooler as compared to its trailer, and hence lack of proper trailer is also a major reason for its loss.
R-Rating
The tag of ‘R-Rated’ is also one of the reason why this movie failed. Due to the R-rating, many theatre owners of distant and undeveloped areas refused to show this movie in their theatres. Remember that the rating was the major reason why Sony’s Venom movie made good collection worldwide.
Lack of Character Development
Although the acting level of the actors of this movie was outstanding, but still the writers focused less on character development of characters apart from Harley Quinn. We saw detailed past scenes of Harley throughout the movie, but nothing such was done for other members of the group.
Not so Cool Villain
The antagonists play a major role in the success of any movie. You can pick a lot of examples from Marvel movies or even DCEU movies like Aquaman. But in case of Birds of Prey, the villain Black Mask was not that touchy to the viewers. Again the reason for this is poor character development of this character throughout the movie.
Gotham without Batman
I mean, seriously? You are showing us the iconic Gotham city where a villain like Black Mask is doing murders and robberies continuously and there is no sign of Batman. The collection of this movie would have been double if atleast they have provided a cameo of Batman, or even Joker somewhere in this movie.
Should I watch this Movie?
If you are confused that rather you should watch this movie in theatre or not, I can help you. The movie was good overally, so if you have some free time from your schedule then you can give it a try. But if for some reasons you are unable to watch it in theatre then also there is nothing to regret about it.
